BiLingo Kidz creator, Phyllis Andersen, Ph.D. earned her doctorate from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. While studying, her daughter, Juanita, was in elementary school. Dr. Andersen realized the difficulty in providing a way for her daughter to learn Spanish while at an age where she could learn native pronunciation. As a result Phyllis chose to do her field research in El Salvador, Central America. She took her daughter crying a screaming with her. As a result, at age 10, Juanita learned Spanish and loved her year in El Salvador. She also learned a lot about how one acquires a second language.
Dr. Andersen taught Spanish to grade school children in a before school program. While doing so she realized two very important things about grade school children and second language acquisition: 1) Parents did not have easy affordable access to a software program to supplement and continue their children’s Spanish learning and 2) the cultural aspects grade school students want to know are about the daily lives of their peers.
While teaching I was introduced to Blaine Ray’s teaching method, TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling).. Dr. Andersen combined the idea of storytelling with the lives of some of her friends from Latin America. BiLingo Kidz allows children to read and listen to Spanish in context of the lives of their peers in Latin America in their homes; no carpools and schedules to work around!!
BiLingo Kidz Corp also believes in the environmental impact of a product and giving back. Therefore, the software can be downloaded from the store catalog eliminating any packaging and mailing. Customers who prefer that we send you a CD-ROM will receive the software in a simple sleeve, conscientiously avoiding excess packaging.
BiLingo Kidz donates 10% of its profits. To date, the donations have gone to support the education of the youth in the village of Huisisilapa, in the municipality of San Pablo Tacachico, Department of La Libertad in El Salvador.
